According to UNAIDS, Australia had 30,000 people living with HIV by the end of year 2021.
Australia has successfully reduced the annual HIV diagnoses every year with the help of community-led HIV organisations, peer education and awareness about harm reduction & protection (AFAO).
HIV is preventable; the most common strategies to prevent HIV include safer sex practices and avoiding sharing needles. Pre-prophylaxis (PrEP – before possible HIV exposure) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP – after HIV exposure) are medicines that can also help prevent HIV.
Undetectable viral load (UVL) can be achieved with HIV medicines that help with the overall health as well as makes the virus un-transmittable through sex or shared needle use.
